about
I’m very excited to release my new song, “Shine Your Wonder” today. It is a song about balancing grief and hope during the COVID-19 pandemic - especially as a parent of a young child.
The cover artwork for this song is a sonogram picture of my second child, a little girl, due this summer. I wrote this song as a time capsule and love note to my children, during this scary, complex, and introspective time. I quickly wrote and recorded it at home, over a couple of late nights this month.
All proceeds from the purchase of this song will be directly donated to support the needs of frontline harm reduction/substance use recovery workers in Boston. They continue to work through this pandemic, like other brave essential workers. My colleagues are some of the most resilient people I know. Please consider purchasing this song to assist them. For the time being, this song will only be available for streaming/purchase on this site.
I’m grateful to my partner Emily and my son James for keeping me grounded, healthy, and loved during this time. I’m also grateful for my best friend/music partner Daniel Stone for working many hours virtually co-producing, mixing, and mastering this song.
This song is dedicated to my children; never lose your wonder.
lyrics
LYRICS:
Weep for the day that is not promised
Thought we had a hold, then we lost it
Dare I say, we never really had it
Reducing a symphony to static
Weep for the world
But hold it close
Weep for the world
But save some hope
Children keep your distance, dim your wonder
Be it six feet apart, or six feet buried under
The hardest lessons never mask their meaning
Like the indifference of a machine that keeps you breathing
Weep for the world
But don’t let go
Weep for the world
You never know
Did I do enough for you?
Will I do enough for you?
When the monster’s invisible, what good is shining light?
Our fear is just as old as the kindness that nurtured the first baby born
Will we quit or will we fight?
Sometimes I try to worry myself empty
So there’s nothing left to steal when death comes to get me
But being numb to grief means being numb all together
Instead, I’ll hold my babies tight - there is no forever
I’m here and I’m breathing, to fight on
Baby boy
And I’m leaving a light on
Baby girl
Shine your wonder
Shine your wonder
Never lose your wonder
